SYDNEY, NSW: 18 November 2015 - NSW will be the first state in Australia to trial the use of drones as a part of a multi-faceted plan to protect commuters who are heading to the beach this holiday season. The community awareness is a response to the increase in rising shark attacks within NSW and the increasing need to further protect swimmers and surfers this summer season.
The Baird Government have announced a total of $16 million to be spent on a new high-technology strategy to combat shark attacks along the NSW coast line, including popular Sydney beaches. Amongst this multi-faceted plan will be the use of shark-detecting drones that are due to be trailed in December 2015, coinciding with the beach holiday season.
The drones will be flown above beaches, and 20 listening stations built along the NSW coast to track sharks in real-time using 4G technology. Together with the upgraded SharkSmart app, this new-technology will alert the public with near real-time shark alerts on mobile phones and tablets.
